Wild dogs

What is a wild dog?

A wild dog refers to all wild-living dogs: dingoes, feral domestic dogs and the hybrid descendants of these (all of which are currently considered to be Canis familiaris).

Control options

Wild dogs generally operate individually or in a small group, but rarely as a pack. They can be extremely cunning which can make control very difficult. Poisoning with 1080 baits, trapping with soft jaw leg hold traps and shooting are effective control tools particularly when they are part of an integrated control approach. Group control across several holdings will achieve the best results.

Local Land Services is partnering with other NSW Government agencies, industry bodies and wild dog control groups using ground and aerial baits, trapping, GPS tracking using collars and monitoring with motion cameras.

Wild dog policy

The NSW Department of Primary Industries is seeking public comment on an updated NSW Wild Dog Management Strategy.

The overarching aim of the NSW Wild Dog Management Strategy (2017–2021) is to reduce the negative impacts of wild dogs within the State. This version of the Strategy is based on the inaugural Strategy, released in 2012. The updated document will guide specific actions to help reduce the negative impacts of wild dogs and defines the roles and responsibilities of government agencies, public and private land managers and other community members in managing wild dogs in NSW.

The updated Strategy has been developed with input from a working group comprising representatives of a broad range of stakeholder organisations. This public consultation process provides an opportunity for additional input on the draft Strategy from individual landholders and other stakeholders.
