“Floating Landcare” takes out top environmental award

Greater Sydney Local Land Services (LLS) is proud to announce that our Floating Landcare Program has taken out the top prize in the Environmental Protection Category at the 2014 Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Clean Beaches Awards.

Floating Landcare has been one of the LLS flagship conservation programs. The Program transports teams of volunteers to remote boat-access-only sites in the iconic Hawkesbury estuary to carry out important environmental restoration works.

The award was also presented to all the organisations involved in Floating Landcare including Landcare Australia, New South Wales National Parks & Wildlife Service, and several local Councils.

Rebecca Mooy, Senior Land Services Officer for LLS said every month a group of volunteers undertake a range of activities including bush regeneration, litter collection and even helping with the Lion Island penguin counts."

"Our volunteers enjoy working in a unique natural environment on the edge of Sydney and winning an award for our work has been the icing on the cake," said Ms Mooy.

In just over two years, Floating Landcare has made its mark on the Hawkesbury estuary, running 40 boat trips, attracting 400 volunteers, who have picked up 3.5 tonnes of marine litter, removed weeds from 2.5 hectares of bushland and contributed more than 2000 hours of volunteer labour.

The involvement of Landcare Australia has helped bring corporate volunteers into the program, including staff from Telstra, Price Waterhouse Coopers and Konika Minolta, and the program has featured on ABC TV's Gardening Australia and ABC Radio National's Off Track.

LLS supports a range of conservation initiatives and congratulates the hundreds of volunteers and project partners that have contributed to the Programs success.

If you want to get involved in Floating Landcare and volunteer for this unique opportunity, check out the program's 2015 Calender of Events.

The next planned event is on Sunday 1 March 2015.
