Biosecurity main attraction for Greater Sydney at the Royal Easter Show

Protecting the NSW agricultural industry against the threat of disease and supporting farmers is the main attraction for Greater Sydney Local Land Services at this year’s Royal Easter Show.
“The Sydney Royal Easter Show is the biggest event of its kind in the country with more than 850,000 people attending each year and one of its main highlights on the agricultural competitions and exhibitions,” Senior Biosecurity officer Lee Parker said.
“As the country’s premier agricultural event and the culmination of a highly competitive agricultural show circuit, hundreds of animals are brought in and out of Sydney Olympic Park and it is important we are on hand to support our farmers and ensure the best stock in the state not at risk.
“We support our landholders year round with pest management and advisory services to ensure our agricultural industry continues to prosper and being on hand at this show is an important component of that.
“Our team work in conjunction with the NSW Department of Primary Industries across the show calendar supporting farmers to stop the spread of disease and protect the broader agricultural industry by carrying out inspections and ensuring the right movement and sale documents are available and in place.”
Mr Parker said it was about making the show experience for our farmers as safe for their stock as possible. “It’s a great chance for us to get out there, provide the right advice and assistance and ensurewe do everything we can to stop the spread of animal diseases which we know can be an ongoing threat to the livestock, productivity and profitability,” he said.
Canberra farmer Debbie Scatter has transported her prize-winning Angora goats to Sydney at show time for the past 10 years.
“It is great to see the presence of these officers who are there to make sure our precious animals are protected,” she said. “This is a wonderful show and it’s a joy to come back year after year.”
