Central Coast waterway warriors recognised

A hardworking group of Central Coast high school students has been recognised for their environmental efforts at a recent awards ceremony in Sydney.
Brisbane Waters Secondary College was awarded the Junior Landcare Award at the Greater Sydney Regional Landcare awards.
Coordinated by Greater Sydney Local Land Services, the awards recognised 11 students and three teachers who have spent more than seven years assisting with the Clean4shore program which sees schools head out to clean up sections of the local river systems.
Teacher Maxine O’Keefe said the Year 10 students contributed more than 300 hours of labour, resulting in 5.77 tonnes of litter being removed from Brisbane Waters, the Hawkesbury Estuary and Tuggerah Lakes.
“Being part of the Clean4shore program provides our students with challenges that improve their communication, problem solving, teamwork, maritime skills and general knowledge of the local environment. It's hands on and the students can see the visual changes in the waterway straight away,” she said.
Clean4shore coordinator Graham Johnstone said the field trips were physically demanding with the students working in muddy mangroves, on rocky foreshores and isolated beaches.
“The Clean4shore program and the general health of our waterways couldn’t do without the enthusiasm of these young people from the local community and the partnership it has with the school,” he said.
Greater Sydney Senior Land Services Officer Rebecca Mooy said the students set an excellent example for their peers.
“Seeing the great work of the Brisbane Waters College students has inspired four other local high schoolss to sign up for the program,” Ms Mooy said.
“These students have developed a sense of responsibility in keeping their local waterways clean of litter and have learnt many life skills while on the water and they are very deserving of our recognition.”
The Greater Sydney Regional Landcare Awards celebrated the efforts of volunteers working on environmental projects across Greater Sydney and were made possible through Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.
