Local farmer boosts productivity

A Hawkesbury turf producer has reaped the benefits of support from Greater Sydney Local Land Services by generating greater profit through a more efficient operation.
Anthony Muscat owns and operates Greener Lawn Supplies at his 70ha Freemans Reach property and said despite more than 25 years in the business, he had never fully appreciated the true cost of growing, delivering, marketing and installing turf.
“The Agriculture team at Greater Sydney provided me with one on one technical support and training in breaking down the true cost of turf production,” he said.
“It was truly shocking to discover the true expense of our outlay, especially when we often sell below cost.”
Greater Sydney Senior Land Services Officer (Irrigation/Turf) Matt Plunkett said with our support and advice Anthony was able to accurately assess which turf varieties give the best returns and change his farm cropping program to increase profitability and recorded a 15 per cent increase in profits despite selling 20 per cent less product.
Mr Plunkett said turf was a growing agricultural industry in the Hawkesbury region that contributes significantly to the local economy.
“We wanted to do something practical that could help those in the industry improve their sustainability and thus, profitability. The workshops were part of a national turf levy funded project to support our producers.”
Greater Sydney LLS are working with Turf NSW to deliver a variety of training courses that focus on reducing input costs to improve profitability. These include water and energy efficiency, advanced chemical management and business improvement programs.
“Since 2014 we have worked with more than 50 producers in NSW on the costs of production project with 30 turf farms attending other a variety of events during that time.
The next component of this project is a free workshop for NSW turf producers on “Enhancing Profitability through Better Turf Nutrition Practices.” This will be held at the Greater Sydney Local Land Service Demo Farm in Richmond on Tuesday 23 February, 10am-1pm.
The first 15 producers to register will receive FREE soil tests (maximum of two per farm). For further details, please contact Greater Sydney Local Land Services on, ph: 1300 795 299.
